the mysterious world of david the gnome

Well, of Germaine Cahoon, but David the Gnome has a tremendously fun hat!

I am busy with my usual nonsense --- taking the next section of portuguese as well as the final class in the comparative literature sequence. Hard to get my head into it though... but I am trucking through!

Recently got back some pictures of a sculpture I made last semester. It was a body extension project, so I made up an alien princess type character, and this was the result:

It is metal brazed (welded with bronze, basically) together and covered with tracing paper and wallpaper glue. The pink bits are spraypaint. Took several weeks to make, but I enjoyed the process, despite momentary frustrations and a pretty nasty burn along the way. I LOVED working with acetylene torches and really wish I had more access to the equipment. Someone said it looked "light and airy" but it was in fact very unwieldy. More/larger versions of these pictures can be found here.

I also was taken by the whim to dye my hair black. It is a dramatic change and some days it looks better than others, but overall I'm quite pleased.

A few members of our bustling household!

Also, here is a tiny movie Dad and I made during my last visit to Ellijay. =)

Here's a little movie of Henry playing his Great Aunt Peggy's piano: henry_piano_20070113.mpg.

Of course, I always think he shows talent, but ... c'mon, he's not just banging on the piano, he's showing some deliberation, and making harmonious sounds.

The long-awaited second installment of our California trip is now over at The Henry Blog.

Sorry to take so long; now that my parents-in-law are here I finally have time to work on such things. Next I'll post some pics from Henry's birthday ... sometime soon.

Happy Birthday Henry!!

Henry is so cool! It seems like just yesterday I was visiting him for his first birthday. =) I didn't know how well a phone call would go or what kind of busyness was scheduled for today, so I recorded a little greeting. I hope Henry won't mind that I'm looking a little rough around the edges ;)

Happy Birthday from me... and apparently a red towel ;P

Sorry for the brevity and crappy quality... my camera is kind of old. Hope today was a great one for all, and especially Henry!!

The Amazing Henry

When I got home from work today, I was amazed to discover what Henry had gotten up and done while Mommy was still sleeping.

We used to have a chair in the kitchen, but Henry would climb up on it to get to the counter, so we moved it out to the dining room. So he grabbed one of his kiddie chairs from the living room and carried it into the kitchen and climbed up to get a bowlful of cheddar bunny crackers.

I don't know how he did it, but his bowl was full of crackers on his little table back out in the living room, and there were no spilled bunnies on the counter or the floor. Amazing!

Unfortunately, not everything he did was that tidy. Somehow, there was a small water spill on his little chair in the kitchen, a near-empty mug of water sitting right in front of our laptop computer on our grown-up table, and water splashed on top of it (thankfully it was closed and undamaged!)

His problem-solving skills are certainly developing in a big way, but unfortunately his solutions are often our problems. When Li's parents get here, it will be much easier to make sure someone keeps a close eye on him.
